Amazing footage I've never seen! Dezzy Dez (aka. Kay Slay The Drama King) breaks it down...
...Dez's interview gives you a good look at the foundation of graffiti culture, the words we live and die by.
So much of what is expressed here was what I learned at Oakland's famed 23rd Street Yards(R.I.P.) on the other side of the country; under Maestros like Dream TDK, Poem HS, Vogue QMC, Krash BSK, and Spie TMC to name a few. Now that 23rd is defunkt (paint yeah, hang out, no) there's a void in the tradition that hundreds, maybe thousands of writers were schooled, made mistakes and proved themselves one way or another. I wonder where the Bay's new frontline of writers are getting put up on what this Writing thing is all about and how the game goes. I came into Graffiti writing about 8 years after this interview was given, and seeing it now, I can definitely say it was carried almost exactly to the letter (no pun intended)... It remains to be seen what the effect the internet has on todays new guard. Time will tell.
What up Fam, daylight savings is upon us, and I'll spare you any "fall back" wordplay. Kasha told me I have an "extra hour" today, so I thought I'd share some music. The first song that came to mind was something I have only on vinyl, so i figured I'd keep it that way throughout. Selections are also pretty autobiographical, songs that made me want to DJ in one way or another. One Take Willie aka Willie Maze lightweight mixed it in a stream of conciousness... this is what it sounds like.
TrackList: 1. Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane - Abide With Me When I'm dead and in a box, I wanna hear this.
2. E-40 - Earl... That's Your Life Earl is totally at home at this tempo. Styling super hard. "Yeah, Too $hort, bust adlibs on my shit... " Classic. Besides, how many rappers gonna tell you their gov't name?
3. Just Ice - Going Way Back
4. Aretha Franklin - Baby I Love You My girl was listening whilst I was recording. (Aww...)
5. Planet Asia - Moonlight Melodic Rush Audible hunger in this mans verses was amazing at this stage.
6. Mistah F.A.B. - If "IF" Was A Fifth F.A.B. tells us about the future and makes some good points about the past too... and about Trina's ass.
7. Jr. Walker & The All-Stars - Cleo's Mood This is my pops copy of this record, the pops and scratches tell you how well loved it was in our house.
8. Joseph Malik - Take It All In and Check It All Out Bay Area Hip Hop Coalition record pool rando record. I instantly liked it, didn't go to the dollar bin at amoeba.
9. Goapele - Higher (Closer Amp Live Remix) Amp Live's production brings a more than worthy tangent to Closer. King Britt made a dope Closer remix that I also felt coulda seen a lot more daylight.
10. Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band - Everyday People Another one of my pops records, love this track cuz it sounds like they coulda been playing this song for hours and decided to start recording. The song fades in and out... so they just may have kept on playing it. I'd love to get my hands on the entire session...
11. Volume 10 - Pistol Grip Pump (UK Jazz Remix) The original version is so classic, I rarely play it out anymore, but UK Jazz Mix? That goes too!
12. Dj Lengua - Pacheco's Cumbia Squares (Remix) This track gets me everytime, this is what I like to call PsyCumbia. Mexican space funk also works. Dj Lengua says Unicornio Records has more projects coming soon, new Dj Lengua and a kid called Chicano Batman. Get familiar.
13. Jay Dee - Fuck The Police Needed to play this since I got harassed earlier this week. Apparently "am I under arrest" sounds like "stand me next to the other brown men in a lineup while someone in a car looks us over" to a cop. Yeah, fuck 'em.
14. Grand Master Caz and Chris Stein - Wild Style Subway Rap 2 The talking in the background makes me laugh. I needed some good advice after the FTP moment.
15. Havana - Tangled Matthew Africa bought this for me in the dollar bin at Amoeba, Nicolay production Havana sounds great over. Figured if it was that important... Matthew has his reasons.
16. Masta Ace Incorporated- The Phat Kat Ride (I.N.C. Ride Remix) Sounds like this Sunday, sun's just breaking. Can't beat it for the Left Eye reference.
17. Otis Redding - Groove Me Been listening to this song my whole life, just now hitting me that this song reminds me of the love of my life right now! Awesome!
18. The Roots - Long Time feat. Peedi Peedi & Bunny Sigler This 19. Joan Jett - Crimson and Clover The first minute or so of this cover goes, then it gets dated real fast...
20. Mic Geronimo - Masta I.C. One of the first records I ever mixed on two turntables. Last I saw the Masta I.C. he was on MTV as a former rapper talking about his relationship with his lady... whatever, this is dope!
21. E-Rule - Listen Up I saw this record, and thought about how I've seen it used as crate cred (Synopsis is the A side) but I think Listen Up is played not nearly enough. E sounds like he could rap forever. The song is waaaay long.
22. O.C. - Word Life (Les Nubianes remix) Is it safe to start playing this again? Nah, I think not. It became hella cliche to the headwraps and Common hat dudes back in the day... still dope tho.
Big up the Fams Dmadness and Dj Zita who are having me guest with the homie Dj Vna at Golden their monthly SF throwdown at Lazlo in the Mission. D asked me a for a mix to "give the people a taste" so here goes... I'm tryna give you that G-G-Golden feeling in less than 15 minutes... to do that, I took various flavors from Shuggie Otis to The Jacka, trew'm in a pot and mixed for about 14 minutes... In one take, it came out sounding like this: Willie Maze - G-G-Golden
Tracklist: 1. Timbaland feat. Drake - Say Something 2. Goapele - Milk and Honey (Sake One Re-Fix) 3. Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information 4. Sylvia Striplin - You Can't Turn Me Away 5. Michael Jackson - I Can't Help It 6. Spank Pops - Beautiful Noise 7. Jacka - Glamourous Lifestyle
Download it here. See yall the November 21st @ Lazlo in La Mission SFC!
Vogue TDK ?CREW 2009 Estria Graffiti Battle National Champion
Congratulations to Vogue TDK/?Crew on winning the 3rd Annual Estria Graffiti Battle! (Katch of Hawaii took 2nd)! Last Saturday, 20 graff writers from across the country came out to Lil' Bobby Hutton Park, aka Defermery Park in West Oakland to paint for the National finals of this now annual community event. The graff battle is a part of the Life is Living festival which featured Dj Sake One, performances by Kev Choice, Pharoah Monch, The Mighty 4 B-Boy Battle, and Town Park Skatejam. Yeah, it was a zoo! Each writer was given 13 cans (Montana 94) to paint an 8'X8' canvas stretched on wooden cubes strewn across the park which was packed with community people on a really good vibe. Writers were given the word "Grow" to freestyle, manifiest, and inspire the community that's watching and interacting during the 5 hour time limit to complete work (it was tough for people like me who are from Oakland, stopping every 30 seconds to hit up a kids blackbook or give pounds and hugs to the fam). Every painter went went super hard this year, making this year's throwdown one for the books!
Since I didn't get to leave the confines of my cube, I'm glad my patna Scott LaRockwell did a bang-up job documenting the day, CHECK IT OUT. Some good shots in the SF Weekley blog too.
Refa TNS's piece was extra dope!
Big thanks to Estria/Bamuthi/Crew and all the volunteers for bringing it all together! This has quickly become my favorite annual community event! Stay up!
I don't believe in coincidence. There I was, listening to the Rich Harrison instrumental he did for Ur-sher, digging thru vinyl for a Jungle Brothers acapella when the 12" of Goapele's Love Me Right jumped up. Take my favorite G-rock jam (Love Me Right), add the acapella with Rich's production (Dat Girl Right There) get to choppin', mix it live on the tables, and Voilá! It's like Milk & Honey. Goapele - Love Me Right Here (WillieMaze Remix)
First off, CONGRATULATIONS are in order. Saturday marks the offical opening of The New Parish Music Hall, which i am proud to say, is owned by good people I cut my teeth with and my muhfuckin' Fam!I couldn't be more proud, and feel hella honored to be asked to open for Bobbito Garcia, Mr. Cucumber Slice himself. Bobbito is a giant in the field, and to have him open Oakland's newest music temple sets one HELL of a tone. Raise it up!
My favorite city in the World is going through some huge thangs right now... around the corner, Gentrification has the Fox Oakland Theater for its rock and alternative music fix, and there is a clear need for music and culture that comes for and by the people of Oakland. From the soil where Sweet Jimmy's once reigned, the opening of The New Parish means our Oakland has a new home for live music and world class entertainment.
Dj Willie Maze opens for Bobbito this Saturday! Get tickets HERE.
If you're on this blog, you know who Bobbito is, but if not...
In this video, a strutting dog takes out a floor rocking man. The human's friend racializes it, then is like "That's it, no more- awww..." when round 3 resumes.
Shits and giggles, Im'a try and be better about posting. Stay tuned.
"THIS IS IIIIIIIIIIIT, THIS IS IIIIIIIIIIIITTT!!!!" -IZ THE WIZ
Filmed 5 days before his passing into LEGEND.
I have been working with Frisco Graffiti's Spie One TMC/TDK/FC on the "DREAM TDK" book project this week, today he informed me that another King has passed on to join the ancestors. Our thoughts and prayers go out to IZ, his family and friends. IZ the WIZ was as central character to the foundation of Graffiti, not to mention the "Style Wars" Documentary which was a huge influence in my upbringing and thousands of other writers around the world.
When the TDK crew put an held a memorial artshow to raise funds for DREAM's son and to fund a book/documentary of DREAM's work, IZ THE WIZ was there, sending original artwork to be auctioned off to support the cause. We will always remember IZ THE WIZ with honor and the utmost respect as a true Graffiti King and bad mother fucker.
“A lotta trains, a lotta fun…a lot of art”. -IZ THE WIZ. [MORE VIDEO CLIPS]
I have spent some time recently with the TDKids, the children of my TDK brethren. This generation will grow up with graffiti in there lives from day one. Had our lives been the slightest bit different, these beautiful little mammals might not exist... who knows? It all might not go down the same without Legends like IZ THE WIZ that inspired us to get up... REST IN POWER. We've got another sprit on our shoulders to lookout for us.

Got an extra fifteen minutes? Big up to the fighting pride of the Pilippines. The knockout was extra gratifying since the Hatton camp was talking HELLA shit. Where's Floyd Maywether's raps now? I believe he called the pound for pound, best boxer in the world a "Mule." Which can make sense when you see the way Hatton hits the canvas like he got kicked in the head.
I took notice of Playboy Tre ridin' with Matthew Africa listening to last years Goodbye America and was really struck by the hunger and emotion in this dudes delivery and writing. Tre killed it at the Fader Fort at SXSW last month, opening for B.O.B. (who is somewhere using another name, strumming a guitar, and ignoring techy bangers of yesterday). I'm such a believer right now, as I post this, I ain't even listened to this new tape yet... ! Saturday listening music... check!
Seriously tipping my hat to Evan Roth. For a letter freak like myself, this is amazing. Word has it he released the source code for the software he used to freak it. *Cheers.*
The Burnerz (Zumbi of ZION I + The ARE of Trackmasters) have responsed to the recent violence in Oakland with a track "Cops Hate Kidz." Say what you will, Zumbi ain't never lie...
“Cops Hate Kidz is written as a response to the murder of Oscar Grant by a Bart Police Officer, as well as the murder of four Oakland officers last week. The Burnerz feel that the tragedies that we are witnessing can be attributed to the long history of police brutality experienced in the black and brown communities.”
Oakland stand up, get organized. Look out for one another. Stand tall or not at all. Found this video too, prolly unofficial, but still pretty thick with footage from Justice for Oscar Grant protests and references to other brutality cases.
This morning I got a twit from Cosmo Baker that said "Albee Square Mall R.I.P." (bummed) and I was perusing OUTSIDE BROADCAST and came across a trailer for BDK: The Big Daddy Kane Story. Hell yeah! A film documenting one of the best to ever hold a mic.
In the trailer BDK mentions getting his first mic at Albee Square Mall so that he could get on... woah, broooo. Shouts to Cos and especially Joe Eleven for making sure I got to post up the Albee Square Mall and sing the song! TJ Swan is freakers on the chorus!
The photo above and video below are prototypes of a Wii Spray can controller for a new Sony video game. The video game industry is hella crazy right now... it seems that no sub culture is safe from the desire of the introvert inside the millions of gamers who want to catharticly experience that which a musician, Graff artist, and dj's (DJ Hero) sacrifice thousands of hours and hard work to become great. The possiblity presented by the Wii spray can is distinctly different than the dynamics of Guitar hero because if the can is built right, the user can actually learn to paint whereas a "Guitar Hero" can't play shit after mastering it. As a writer, I can see the learning curve getting shorter and shorter without the elements of danger, expense and potential jail time. The part of me that wants to "keep it real" is at odds with the possiblity of a future where we will have to be even better at our craft to hold the crown. So be it. WiiSpray Teaser from Martin Lihs on Vimeo.
The users in this video suck, but the potential in the Wii Spray is there. In the end, who's on your team?
Graff writer who learned to paint on the street? Or...
Wii Graff painter who learned in the comfort of they living room?
Graffiti could potentially have a Rap vs. Internet Rapper momenet really soon... ugh.
p.s. Serato allowed in the DMC competition? You ain't heard that from me...
My favorite childhood book by Maurice Sendak is being made into a live action movie...There's always an opportunity for a project like this to fuck up something damn near perfect... but if it can be done justice, I'd say this team could. Once we concede that the book will always be better than the film and before you start ranting, peep the lineup: Directed by Spike Jonze Screenplay by Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers Music by Karen O & Carter Burwell... word!
Perfect closing ceremony for SXSW 2009... Till next year... Update: Ok, go... Last year's Sabbath In The Park was my first. My receipt for coffee and eats on the way there came to 6 dollars and 66 cents($6.66). The coffee jockey was like "dude..." and I assured him that it was a sign that I was on the true path to destruction... and SABBATH IN THE PARK. I gave the receipt to Cosmo for some reason, and it's now that I realize that it's so I can give you his official Sabbath In The Park Wickemix 666!
This year marks the 3rd (Austin) Sabbath In The Park, which by Austin charter, grandfathers it in so that Sabbath In The Park can happen every SXSW for eternity!
"You bad as FUCK!" - 1 O.A.K. of the Honor Roll Word!
MALUCA hit me with a whitsle. I'd never heard of her, but 4 songs later, I'm bout it. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure hardly anyone knew, but by the end it was as full (as an early for SX show was gonna get) of whistle blowing drunks! Find out!
I can honstly say they blew me the fuck away... 4 piece outfit killing it remixing classics keeping it hella Hip-Hop and actually melted my (grand) cynicism about "Live" H.H. Bands. These cats had a room full of DJs/artists rocking and documenting... you WILL hear about 'em... don't trip!
Find out about this 2 dude outfit! It's unanimous... 2nd most enjoyable Performance of SXSW so far... I laughed, I cried. Hottest Video/vocoder/costume act since Humpty Hump of D.U. -wm
And I quote... "What's the world coming to when there's no Cilantro ona mans tacos?"
Davey D, Cosmo baker 1st meeting... shit like this warms my lil' heart and is why I love SXSW. PS... Jonelle Monet's stage presence is GARGANTUAN! She is hella like a new GRACE JONES! (No pics, she was THAT good).
Amoeba Music , easily one of my favorite spots to dig for vinyl, is throwing a warehouse party ala "Warhol 60's" steez... Guess who is gonna paint the walls? A Montana Cans sponsorship lured a dope crew of Graff Writers to paint... unconfirmed invitees are Buder TMF, Keb ICP, Wand TM7, Mike Giant, Meut TDK, Coro, PI= 3.14... Big up to Buder for working his magic, think I'll pass out when is see how many cans of Montana Gold we're working with... check back for sidekick photos and updates on the walls! Oh yeah, the party is free so come thru!
In antcipation I thought I'd share some shit witcha... I was peeping DJ ICEWATER's aka. DJ Pinoy Noir's AWESOME blog The Source Pages and was floored by the GRAFFITI ROCK episode that had me all nostalgic and laughing. Enjoy! Thanks Icewater! "Just check out THIS!" Graffiti Rock from DJ Pinoy Noir on Vimeo.
Seeing corny productions of "hip hop" in its commercial infancy is dope when you think of all it's latter day manifestations... it's a long way from the f'n billion dollar circus that comes to mind nowadays... yowza.
Sup Fam?! Meet my dude Derek of DMD METAL. Derek and I have been painting walls together for a while now. He's a SICK painter, but also the ILLEST jeweler EVER. He created the GRAFFILTHY HOOPS which i bought for my lady.... a sick Funk Style alphabet makes an accessory basic make a DOPE piece of art. Peep... People literally can't stop complimenting them, neither can I. It's such a hot idea, that he made a piece for dudes that is arguably more Hip-Hop than the four finger ring... check out the GRAFFILTHY RING...Derek HELLA outdoes himself on his signature piece... the TRAIN HOOPS ... these shits are f'n unbelieveably detailed. Once again, a variation of a fashion staple, the hoop/name plate but with a mini subway train bombin' scene that is CUSTOMIZABLE. Wholly shit... he can bust a handstyle, throw-up, or burner with your/your girls name or whatever on the train... WTF?! Game over!In the Graff world Derek is bonafide, ask somebody... as a jeweler, a total professional. All Derek's work is done by hand, so if you love graffiti, stylin', and craftmanship holler at D!... You can find these and more dope stuff for your fam at Derek's ETSY STORE. (He's too humble about pricing in my opinion... get yours!)
This graphic is disturbing and awe inspiring... FUCK YEAH! This week has all the makings of a MONSTER! To quote a brilliant man: "I wanna see you dance..." haha Lets go!
You're thoroughly rocking a set at a club, everything is going as planned... erryone is rocking steady, the ladies looking right, you've got it about to pop FOR REAL, and then *scream* a fucking breakdance circle errupts! Now, before you keep it real and pull my Hip Hop card, I love the art of B-Boy'n and DJing for BBoys/Grrs is one of my great joys... but in a sweatbox, it's hella out of context, alienates everyone else, the atmosphere we worked on creating is now centered on your bullshit look at me "DANCE-TURBATION." I don't know what's worse, when it's your patna from round way, or some hippy raver who just took a tab to the knob... ugh.
HAS THIS HAPPENED TO YOU?
Luckily, DLAKE and DJ MORSY banged out a song that can help you deal with those fucks. They formed a Baltimore supergroup called CLAIRE HUX! Click that shit and download the mixtape by Bmore O.G. Scotty B. Here's a video (kinda). Can't wait to drop this on the next hippy raver spinnin' on his lips!
I was on Discobelle th'other day and APPARENTLY the dudes of Flight of the Conchords made their own version... hmmm. Funny. But biting is never condoned. Spread the Dicks out.
